About

Hello everybody, I’m Henry Barrow, Talking about wine. I’m going to be with you every day if you choose, and I’ll be talking about wine. You probably want to know who this guy is and why should I listen to him.
First, I am Henry Barrow. I live in Miami, Florida. After 40 years in broadcasting I retired and after six months of pure boredom, went into the wine business. My background in wine was not something new. During the years I was the morning news anchor on WIOD radio in Miami, I was also the color announcer on the Miami Dolphins Football Network. Wine came into my life in 1967 while I was in California to broadcast the Dolphins game with the San Diego Chargers. After that game I saw no sense in returning to Miami for a couple of days and then flying back to California to broadcast a Dolphins game against the Oakland Raiders, so I stayed in California. After heading north to Ricky’s Hyatt House in Palo Alto to wait for the game, I was seeking something to do. People suggested I head to Napa Valley, where I was told, they make wine.
In Napa I had the good fortune to meet Leigh Knowles of Beaulieu Vineyards, who introduced me to California wine pioneers like Peter Mondavi, Joe Heitz, Louis Martini, Hans Kornell and Brother Timothy of Christian Brothers. All of those wonderful people wanted me to taste their wines and loaded me up with wines to take back to Miami. The California elite and I drank wine and ate good food all day and when I left I was converted from bourbon and ginger ale to wine… California wine.
When I returned to Miami I began talking about wine on the morning show on WIOD. That morning talk led to a regular morning feature which we called “Wine at Nine,” and it continued from 1967 until 1993, when I left WIOD. Since that original visit , I have toured the wine regions of California, Oregon, France, Germany and Chile several times. Wine at Nine continued at WAXY radio in Miami until I retired from full-time radio in 1999. In 2000, Classical 1360 radio in Miami asked me to do a 5-minute nightly report, which I called “Talking About Wine.” I took the nightly feature off 1360 on January 26,2005. It is now here for everyone to hear, read and see. This site will grow as we continue.
As we grow, we will feature
- iPod downloads (see “About Podcasting”)
- Extended interviews with winemakers and wine people
- A question and answer feature, My daily “Talking About Wine”
- A photo gallery so you can see where I have been in the wine world
- A place for you to ask questions and advice.
- The site will eventually feature video interviews.
That, however, is down the road. I hope you will check us out every day for new information and fun. I also hope if you are having an important dinner and need some suggestions for wines to serve, you will ask me for advice. I’ll be happy to answer your questions. You will also see information about my seminars, which are done for corporations and law firms. These one-day seminars are designed to help young executives feel comfortable taking international clients out to dinner and be able to order wines that perfectly match the foods the client chooses.
Most of all, I welcome you to talkingaboutwine.com, and hope you will be with us every day. I promise you something new each and every day, including weekends. I also ask that you contact our advertisers and let them know you heard about them on hbwines.net.
If you wish to advertise on hbwines.net, contact us and we’ll get you going. Just remember, the sun will come up tomorrow if you don’t think about wine, but it will shine brighter if you do. I don’t believe in wine snobbery. Wine is a natural part of our daily life. I firmly believe that a meal without wine is breakfast, and I’m searching for the perfect breakfast wine. See you soon.
I’m Henry Barrow, talking about wine.
